Do You Know How Much Protein In Roti Is?

Protein is an essential nutrient for human beings. It is found in many foods but is particularly abundant in meat and dairy products. Some people argue that protein in roti, a type of Indian flatbread, is the best and cheapest source. Some rotis are made of wheat flour, others with rice flour, millet flour, or multigrain flour. Despite their variations, all rotis contain some amount of protein. So lets see how much protein in roti is.

Wheat roti is a type of unleavened Indian flatbread made from whole wheat flour. It is popular in the Indian subcontinent, and people eat it with curries, lentil dishes, or chicken curry. You can also stuff roti with vegetables or paneer (a type of cheese).

Generally, roti is slight think flatbread as made in Punjab whereas chapati is a relatively thin flatbread. Nevertheless, you can use both words to describe the Indian flatbread. 

For calculating the protein in roti, we have presumed that the roti is thicker and made of 40 gm of whole wheat flour without ghee or oil and just a pinch of salt. The effect on sodium and other nutrition due to the addition of salt is not discussed in this article.

Calories in 1 roti are 128.02 kCal, as much as 6.40 % of male DRI of 2000 kCal. Further, it can attain 8.53 % of female DRI of 1500 kCal. Protein is 13.22 %, Carbs 80.21 % and Fats are 4.29 % of the calories.

Protein in roti without ghee is 4.23 gm, particularly 5.64 % of male DRI of 75 gm. Therefore, it can complete 7.52 % of female DRI of 56.25 gm. To clarify, protein DRI is 15% of calories.

Protein forms 13.22 % of the calories in roti, including amino acids.

Histidine in roti is 43.146 mg which translates to the following. 

a. 8.63 % of DRI of 500 mg for an adult weighing 50 kg. 

b. 7.19 % of DRI of 600 mg for a grown-up weighing 60 kg. 

c. 6.16 % of DRI of 700 mg for a person of weight 70 kg. 

d. 5.39 % of DRI of 800 mg for an adult weighing 80 kg.

lsoleucine in roti is 63.873 mg which works out as follows. 

a. 12.77 % of DRI of 500 mg for a person weighing 50 kg. 

b. 10.65 % of DRI of 600 for an adult weighing 60 kg mg. 

c. 9.12 % of DRI of 700 mg for an individual weighing 70 kg. 

d. 7.98 % of DRI of 800 mg for an individual weighing 80 kg.

Leucine in roti is 103.635 mg and deduced as follows. 

a. 14.81 % of DRI of 700 mg for a person weighing 50 kg. 

b. 12.34 % of DRI of 840 mg for an adult weighing 60 kg. 

c. 10.58 % of the requirement of 980 mg for an adult with a weight of 70 kg. 

d. 9.25 % of DRI of 1120 mg for a person weighing 80 kg.

Lysine in roti is 41.031 mg which completes our nutrition as follows. 

a. 6.84 % of DRI of 600 mg for an adult weighing 50 kg. 

b. 5.70 % of DRI of 720 mg for an adult weighing 60 kg. 

c. 4.88 % of DRI of 840 mg for a person of weight 70 kg. 

d. 4.27 % of DRI of 960 mg for an adult weighing 80 kg.

Methionine & Cystine in roti is 67.68 mg and its nutrition can be summarised as follows. 

a. 10.41 % of DRI of 650 mg for a person weighing 50 kg. 

b. 8.68 % of DRI of 780 for a person weighing 60 kg mg. 

c. 7.44 % of DRI of 910 mg for an individual weighing 70 kg. 

d. 6.51 % of DRI of 1040 mg for an individual weighing 80 kg.

Phenylalanine & Tyrosine in roti is 120.555 mg and its sufficientness for a person can be translated as follows. 

a. 17.22 % of DRI of 700 mg for an adult person weighing 50 kg. 

b. 14.35 % of DRI of 840 mg for an adult weighing 60 kg. 

c. 12.30 % of the requirement of 980 mg for an adult with a weight of 70 kg. 

d. 10.76 % of DRI of 1120 mg for a person weighing 80 kg.

Threonine in roti is 43.569 mg and its adequacy can be written as follows. 

a. Closely 12.45 % of DRI of 350 mg for an adult individual weighing 50 kg. 

b. 10.37 % of DRI of 420 mg for an adult weighing 60 kg. 

c. 8.89 % of DRI of 490 mg for a person of weight 70 kg. 

d. 7.78 % of DRI of 560 mg for an adult weighing 80 kg.

Tryptophan in roti is 16.92 mg and its value can be summarised as follows. 

a. 9.67 % of DRI of 175 mg for an individual person weighing 50 kg. 

b. 8.06 % of DRI of 210 mg for an adult weighing 60 kg. 

c. 6.91 % of DRI of 245 mg for an individual weighing 70 kg. 

d. 6.04 % of DRI of 280 mg for an individual weighing 80 kg.

Valine in roti is 86.715 mg whose worthiness is as follows. 

a. 17.34 % of DRI of 500 mg for an adult weighing 50 kg. 

b. 14.45 % of DRI of 600 mg for an adult weighing 60 kg. 

c. 12.39 % of the requirement of 700 mg for an adult with a weight of 70 kg. 

d. 10.84 % of DRI of 800 mg for a person weighing 80 kg.

Considering a 2000 kcal diet and assuming the diet is designed for 15% of protein by calories:

1 roti protein – 1 medium roti without ghee will give you 4.23 grams of protein, equivalent to 5.64 % of male and 7.52 % of female DRI.

2 roti protein – 2 medium rotis short of ghee gives you 8.46 grams of protein equal to 11.28 % of male and 15.04 % of female DRI.

3 roti protein – 3 medium rotis without ghee provide 12.68 grams of protein, comparable to 16.91 % of male and 22.5 % of female DRI.

Ghee is 100% fat and does not contain any protein. Adding a scoop of ghee of around 5 grams will not add any protein to roti. But, there will be an addition of 45 kcal per scoop of ghee in the roti calories.
