Protein is an essential nutrient for human beings. It is found in many foods but is particularly abundant in meat and dairy products. Some people argue that protein in roti, a type of Indian flatbread, is the best and cheapest source. Some rotis are made of wheat flour, others with rice flour, millet flour, or multigrain flour. Despite their variations, all rotis contain some amount of protein. So lets see how much protein in roti is.

Wheat roti is a type of unleavened Indian flatbread made from whole wheat flour. It is popular in the Indian subcontinent, and people eat it with curries, lentil dishes, or chicken curry. You can also stuff roti with vegetables or paneer (a type of cheese).

Generally, roti is slight think flatbread as made in Punjab whereas chapati is a relatively thin flatbread. Nevertheless, you can use both words to describe the Indian flatbread. 

For calculating the protein in roti, we have presumed that the roti is thicker and made of 40 gm of whole wheat flour without ghee or oil and just a pinch of salt. The effect on sodium and other nutrition due to the addition of salt is not discussed in this article.

Protein In Roti Made Up Of The Whole Wheat Floor

a. Serving size:  1 Roti made with 40 gm wheat floor, water without oil or ghee

b. Calories in 1 roti are 128.02 kCal, as much as 6.40 % of male DRI of 2000 kCal. Further, it can attain 8.53 % of female DRI of 1500 kCal. Protein is 13.22 %, Carbs 80.21 % and Fats are 4.29 % of the calories.

c. Protein in roti without ghee is 4.23 gm, particularly 5.64 % of male DRI of 75 gm. Therefore, it can complete 7.52 % of female DRI of 56.25 gm. To clarify, protein DRI is 15% of calories.

d. Protein forms 13.22 % of the calories in roti, including amino acids.

a. 8.63 % of DRI of 500 mg for an adult weighing 50 kg.

d. 5.39 % of DRI of 800 mg for an adult weighing 80 kg.

a. 6.84 % of DRI of 600 mg for an adult weighing 50 kg.

How much protein can you get from roti?

Considering a 2000 kcal diet and assuming the diet is designed for 15% of protein by calories:

a. 1 roti protein – 1 medium roti without ghee will give you 4.23 grams of protein, equivalent to 5.64 % of male and 7.52 % of female DRI.

b. 2 roti protein – 2 medium rotis short of ghee gives you 8.46 grams of protein equal to 11.28 % of male and 15.04 % of female DRI.

c. 3 roti protein – 3 medium rotis without ghee provide 12.68 grams of protein, comparable to 16.91 % of male and 22.5 % of female DRI.

Protein in roti with ghee

Ghee is 100% fat and does not contain any protein. Adding a scoop of ghee of around 5 grams will not add any protein to roti. But, there will be an addition of 45 kcal per scoop of ghee in the roti calories.
